I was commissioned by a representative of the Boston Hurricanes 9-man team competing in the 2026 USA Volleyball Nationals to design a jersey that the team could both wear during the tournament and sell to help raise funds for the trip. With the tournament taking place in Orlando, the concept focused on blending elements of Boston, Florida, and Chinese cultural symbolism.
 

The central graphic features a phoenix — representing both the intense Florida heat and the bird’s strong connection to wind within Chinese elemental philosophy. The goal was to create something powerful, symbolic, and visually striking while still honoring the cultural roots of the team and the sport’s community.
 

Color and energy were heavily inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender, particularly the iconic clash between Zuko and Azula. The contrast of orange and blue fire helped guide the palette and motion within the design, giving the jersey a sense of intensity and balance.
